4 Trendy Products That Aren’t Good for Your Smile

Many people today are excited to try out the latest fads they see on social media, especially if they promise to promote better overall health. While some methods can boost your quality of life, certain popular trends are bad for your teeth. Without the proper know-how, you may end up putting your dental health at risk of more serious health issues later on. Read on to learn about four trendy products you may want to avoid when practicing preventive dental care!

#1: Activated Charcoal

This has become one of the most popular items for oral hygiene, as activated charcoal is said to be able to absorb toxins and stains for healthier gums and teeth. However, the American Dental Association hasn’t found sufficient evidence to either back up these claims or confirm that this product is safe for your smile. Activated charcoal is an abrasive substance, meaning it can gradually wear away your enamel and make your teeth more vulnerable to damage, decay, and infection.

#2: Apple Cider Vinegar

Many proponents of apple cider vinegar boast that this drink can help calm an upset stomach, soothe a sore throat, lower cholesterol, cure hiccups, and lose weight. Although these benefits are appealing, this product is highly acidic. Any prolonged contact with your teeth can increase your risk of cavities and acid erosion, which can weaken and deteriorate your pearly whites over time. If you choose to drink this, be sure to rinse your mouth with water to regain a neutral pH level.

#3: Sparkling Water

While sparkling water may not be caffeinated like sodas, they are still acidic. They also come in variations that add citric acid to make orange, lemon, or lime flavors, which increases the acidity level into the same range as sports drinks. To avoid lowering the pH in your mouth and weakening your enamel, try eating a meal with this beverage to neutralize the acid content.

#4: Lemon Juice Detox

This popular method claims to cleanse the body of toxins as well as help you drastically lose weight. The “Master Cleanse” also consists of fresh lemon and maple syrup. While the first is acidic, the other is packed with sugar content. Additionally, since the detox requires liquids only, you may reduce your saliva production due to a lack of chewing. This can make bacteria more likely to thrive, raising the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Although these popular trends can be beneficial, you may want to hold off on them to preserve your smile. Instead, stick to a nutritious diet, practice good exercise, and maintain proper oral hygiene to make the most of your dental and overall health!
