Frequently Asked Dental Questions - Oshkosh, WI

Confused About Care?
We’re Here to Help

Dentistry can be straightforward if you only want a quick exam and cleaning. However, many people don’t know how often they should be visiting for preventive care. In other cases, they may be told they need a treatment that they’ve never heard of. No matter what service it is you need or what concerns you may have, we’re happy to highlight a handful of our most common questions as well as our detailed answers for your convenience.

How often should I visit for a routine checkup?

Most patients should be visiting our dental office once every six months to have an exam and cleaning completed. Routine visits are the bedrock for long-term oral health and are necessary on top of daily brushing and flossing. We are happy to serve families and recommend bringing your child in for their first appointment within six months of their first birthday or after their first tooth erupts.

Can I remove tartar on my own?

Unfortunately, no. Tartar is a form of calcified plaque that is hardened on teeth and the gum tissue. Only a professional hygienist or dentist can safely remove this material, which is precisely why routine cleanings are crucial to preventing tooth decay and gum disease. In some cases, tartar can cause severe gum disease, which is irreversible, so always practice oral care at home and maintain regular cleanings at our dental office.

How can you enhance my smile?

There are many ways to make your smile look exactly the way you want it to. For example, teeth whitening helps you lighten your smile multiple shades, but so does quick and affordable composite resin. We also offer metal-free restorations to protect teeth without making them noticeable in your smile.

I’m nervous about care. How can you help?

Comfort is one of Oshkosh Complete Dentistry’s top priorities, which is why we do everything we can to create a relaxing environment for our patients. With that said, we also provide varying levels of sedation dentistry to help you relieve anxiety or nervousness prior to and during your appointments.

Do I need metal braces to straighten teeth?

Not necessarily. While severe cases of overcrowding, crooked or misaligned teeth as well as uneven bites may require metal braces, more mild cases can be treated with a series of Invisalign clear aligners. Not only can you reduce the amount of time needed to realign your smile but you can also keep your current oral care habits and continue to enjoy many of your favorite foods.

Is there an alternative for metal fillings?

Yes! Many patients would prefer to avoid using metal materials in their teeth, which is why we regularly recommend tooth-colored composite resin to restore teeth damaged by cavities. We also provide porcelain crowns designed to mimic your enamel exactly, so no one but you and Dr. Heil will know you had treatment completed.

Can I receive a full smile makeover?

In some cases, patients need a comprehensive restorative and cosmetic treatment plan to address stains, gaps, chips, cracks and other imperfections in their smiles. This can mean a combination of certain dental services, including porcelain veneers, Lumineers, tooth-colored crowns, cosmetic bonding, and teeth whitening.
