After a long year, it is finally summer. You have so many fun things to look forward to this season. Whether you are just hanging out by the neighborhood pool meeting up with your friends, or have an elaborate beach vacation planned, you certainly don’t want anything to get in the way of your time away from the office. Here are a few summer oral health tips that can help you to avoid dental problems throughout the duration of your summer vacation.

Excellent Oral Hygiene

You need to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine if you want to avoid oral health issues. This means brushing twice and flossing at least once every day. Another step to include is rinsing with a mouthwash. Schedule regular cleanings and checkups with your dentist to make sure that everything is in good shape.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

If you are like most people, summer is the time of year when it is easy to head to the fridge and consume foods and beverages that are high in sugar. Whether you prefer cola, lemonade, or a frozen margarita, this isn’t the best idea when it comes to your smile. Save these treats for special occasions. When you are constantly sipping on them, you could end up with enamel erosion or tooth decay.

Drink Water

In order to stay hydrated, be sure that you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. If you have the option, fluoridated tap water is best. This is a natural mineral that’s found in rocks, and it leeches into groundwater. This helps to protect your teeth from decay. Fluoride is especially helpful for younger children whose permanent teeth are still developing.

Be Careful!

Your teeth are intended to help you munch on your food, keep saliva in your mouth, and smile. They aren’t made for opening packages, crunching on ice, or biting your fingernails. You could end up chipping or cracking your tooth!

Use a Mouthguard

Spending time outside and exercising is important for your health, but when you participate in contact sports, you are risking a dental injury. By using a mouthguard, you can reduce your risk of breaking or knocking out a tooth!

Don’t neglect your smile during the summer months. By using the tips listed above, you can keep your oral health in good shape throughout the season!
