Few things are more frustrating than trying to sleep while dealing with a throbbing toothache. The pain can feel even worse at night when there are fewer distractions, and your body is lying still. Whether the ache is due to a cavity, gum infection, or an injury, getting some rest is crucial for healing and feeling better. Fortunately, there are 6 simple and effective ways to manage dental pain at home so you can sleep through the night more comfortably.

1. Elevate Your Head

When you lie flat, blood can rush to your head and intensify inflammation and pressure around the affected tooth. Try sleeping with an extra pillow or two to keep your head elevated. This position helps reduce blood flow to the painful area, easing discomfort and making it easier to fall asleep.

2. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. If you’re able to take them, these medications can provide enough relief to help you drift off to sleep. Always follow the recommended dosage and avoid placing aspirin directly on your gums; it can cause chemical burns.

3. Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress or ice pack can numb the area and reduce swelling. Wrap ice or a cold pack in a towel and place it on the outside of your cheek near the sore tooth for 15 to 20 minutes. Repeat as needed before bed. The cold sensation can interrupt pain signals and provide soothing relief.

4. Use a Saltwater Rinse

Before heading to bed, rinse your mouth with warm salt water to cleanse the area and reduce inflammation. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. This natural remedy can ease irritation and help flush out bacteria.

5. Avoid Eating Right Before Bed

Eating, especially sugary or acidic foods, can worsen a toothache. Try to avoid food and drinks at least an hour before bedtime. If you must eat, stick to soft, bland foods and rinse your mouth well afterward. Brushing gently before bed can also help remove food particles that might irritate your tooth.

6. Try Clove Oil or a Numbing Gel

Clove oil is a natural pain reliever that contains eugenol, which has numbing and antibacterial properties. Apply a small amount to a cotton ball and place it near the painful tooth. Over-the-counter oral numbing gels are also available and can temporarily dull the ache so you can fall asleep more easily.

Contact Your Dentist in the Morning

While these tips can help you get through the night, they’re not long-term solutions. A nighttime toothache often signals an underlying problem that needs professional treatment. Call your dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation and proper care.

Sleeping with a toothache can be tough, but with the right steps like pain relievers, cold compresses, and good oral hygiene, you can make it through the night more comfortably. Just remember, these are temporary fixes. Don’t ignore persistent pain – your dentist is your best ally in finding permanent relief.
